Any selector the browser understands - "#content", ".infobox", "table.wikitable tbody". The element is lifted out of the page and rendered on its own: the page width is kept and the height trimmed to the element, so a tall one still paginates. Matching nothing, or an element with no size, fails the conversion rather than quietly producing the whole page.
